Teatro Dom Roberto
- About the Show
- The "Teatro Dom Roberto" is one of the forms of Portuguese popular puppet theatre that grew in the 18th century thanks to itinerant companies that performed in the cities all over Europe. The folk theatre plays also had a strong influence in the construction of what we know today as “Teatro Dom Roberto”.
This theatre was performed on the street, on the beach, village parties and fairs, by a lonesome puppeteer with his tent, puppets and his “swazzle” object that when placed on the palate amplifies the sounds accentuating the dynamics of the manipulation, fast and rhythmic that for three hundred years hovers on the top of Dom Roberto’s tent, with big or small tricks, depending on the puppeteer and the plays.
Today Dom Roberto is part of the portuguese cultural heritage, performed by puppeteers that have a strong connection to puppet theatre.
Teatro Dom Roberto is in Portugal like Punch and Judy is in England, Le Guinhol in France and Polichinello in Italy. In this repertoire there are two plays “O Barbeiro” (The Barber) and “A Tourada” (The Bullfight). This repertoire was remade by Sara Henriques (Actress / Puppeteer) based on the video recordings of Teatro Dom Roberto by João Paulo Seara Cardoso, director of Teatro de Marionetas do Porto, the company she worked from 2003 to 2013.
This show opened in May of 2012 in the “Festival Internacional de Marionetas e Formas Animadas” (FIMFA) in Lisbon.
